The kitchen, often referred to as the heart of the home, is constantly evolving. As we step into 2025, we’re seeing a wave of kitchen trends that are supposed to give our kitchens a fresh look. However, while these trends might be fun to explore for home owners who intend to stay in their homes for a while yet, they might not be so suitable if you plan on selling your home in the next year. In this article, we discuss some design trends and the potential impacts on home sellers.

All about the colour

Over the pandemic we saw a distinct trend to more nurturing colours. It seemed everyone was painting their kitchen cupboards sage green or cinnamon. In the Barbie era, we saw pink in all shades, especially the Pantone colour of the year, Peach Fuzz. However, for 2025, the predictions are for a more timeless colour palette. So what’s on trend for 2025?

Terracotta
Terracotta is one of those hard-working tones that works well in most styles and won’t upset buyers. The colour feels natural and evokes a sense of tranquility and Italian kitchens.

Pistachio
Getting away from the depth of colour of sage, pistachio offers a great bridge to a lighter palette. It’s fresh, inviting and easy to use as an accent, maybe as a backsplash.

Pantone colour of the year: Future Dusk
This is a deeply saturated blue-violet. Let’s face it, it isn’t a colour we’re likely to see in Hills kitchens anytime soon.

Implications for home sellers: While on-trend colours can look wonderful in photography, they might not appeal to the potential buyers of your home. We find neutral colours like white, grey or greige are generally more universally appealing.

Countertops making a statement

One trend we’ve seen overseas is the countertop becoming a focal point with dramatic patterns rather than the understated granite or lightly patterned marble. These bolder surfaces are being extended to be the backsplash as well.

Implications for home sellers: While bold patterns can make a statement, they won’t suit everyone’s taste. We prefer our kitchens to be calm, welcoming spaces. If you’re planning to sell your home, consider choosing a more classic and timeless countertop material in a neutral colour. As long as the material is durable and easy to care for, your kitchen will appeal to a wider range of buyers.

Suspended shelving

Suspended shelving over kitchen islands is a stylish and functional trend. It not only adds visual interest but also provides additional storage space. When combined with integrated lighting, it can create a truly stunning effect.

Implications for home sellers: While suspended shelving can be a great way to showcase your favourite kitchenware, it may not be practical for everyone. Consider using traditional cabinetry for storage and reserving the suspended shelves for decorative items. This approach will appeal to a wider range of buyers.

Glass-fronted kitchen cabinets

Glass-fronted cabinets are replacing open shelving in many modern kitchens. They offer a clean and organised look while keeping your belongings dust-free and protected.

Impacts for home sellers: Glass-fronted cabinets are a great way to showcase your beautiful dishware and glassware. They’re certainly less work than open shelving, which looks great in magazines but is difficult to maintain in real life. However, to us they seem a bit old-fashioned, plus it’s important to keep glass cabinets tidy and well-organised. Cluttered cabinets can detract from the overall aesthetic of your kitchen. We know that more buyers prefer the cleaner look of closed cabinets that hide a multitude of sins.

Warmer country-style kitchens

Many designers have predicted that our obsession with minimalism is out and more textured cabinets and fixtures are in.

Implications for home sellers: While country-style kitchens come back into fashion every so often, most buyers want to customise the country kitchen look. If your kitchen is sleek and clean, don’t change anything if you plan on selling soon. Let buyers make their own mark on your home.

By understanding these emerging kitchen trends and their potential impact on home sales, you can make informed decisions to create a space that is both stylish and functional. Remember, while trends come and go, timeless design principles will always hold true.
