Easter is late this year, with Easter Day falling on 20 April. This means the weather will likely be cooler. Why not take advantage of the season by enjoying some of the many Easter activities or taking some day trips while returning to the comfort of your home?
Things to do in and around Sydney over Easter
1. Easter markets
We found two markets we think could be worth a look.
Cronulla Easter Market will feature over 150 stalls covering everything from homewares, food, fashion, art, craft and photography to textiles, jewellery, children’s clothing and toys, hats, treats and toys for pets, leatherwork and paper products.
This year, the market will be on Saturday and Sunday, 2 and 3 April. You’ll find it at Don Lucas Reserve, Wanda Beach.
The European Easter Market in Ashfield this year on 14 April will feature cultural festivities, European food like delicious pierogi (meat or cheese dumplings) food, crafts and other wares. Younger children will be delighted to see the Easter Bunny and savour choc treats. You’ll find the market at the Polish Club, 182 Liverpool Road, Ashfield. The Polish Club is a five-minute walk from the train station.
2. Festivals, shows and fairs
The Campbelltown Easter Fair will run from 18 to 21 April at the Campbelltown Showground and feature food trucks, family carnival rides, entertainment and fireworks.
West Ryde Easter Celebrations
Great for families, the Easter festivities In West Ryde are sure to please. You’ll find an animal farm, pony rides, food truck treats and local performers. Younger kids will meet the Easter Bunny and get their own special treats. Head to Anzac Park, Wattle Street, West Ryde on 12 April from 9 am to 3.30 pm
Sydney Royal Easter Show
How long has it been since you spent a day at the Show? This year if you’re staying home for Easter, give the Show a go. If you don’t mix well with crowds, it’s best to go early.
Day trips from Rouse Hill by train
We love the train for so many reasons. You don’t have to worry about heavy Easter traffic. You have the pleasure of watching the scenery pass by. Best of all, you don’t need to worry about parking. We have found some excellent day trips from Sydney by train.
The Blue Mountains: Easter, with autumn colours and beautiful gardens to view, is wonderful in the mountains. We recommend visiting Everglades Garden and the Leura Mall in Leura or one of the parks and gardens at Mount Wilson. Other spots to visit include Breenhold Garden and Merry Garth Garden but you’ll find plenty of beautiful autumn foliage in local parks.
Kiama: The two-and-a-half-hour train trip to Kiama is one of the most beautiful, travelling through the Royal National Park and past coastal villages like Stanwell Park and Austinmer. When you arrive in Kiama, you can visit the famous blowhole and museum before finding a café or restaurant for lunch. You can also visit one of the nearby beaches like Bombo, one stop back on the train.
Berry: If you don’t want to stay in Kiama for the whole day, just a couple of stops further on from Kiama is the quaint village of Berry (“the town of trees”) with its award-winning restaurants, boutique shopping and beautiful autumn displays.
Southern Highlands: Bowral, one of the most-visited towns in the area, is well-known to cricket fans. The Australian cricket icon Don Bradman played cricket here from 1925. For those looking for a pleasant day out, Bowral’s charming village atmosphere, boutique shops, cosy pubs and autumn colours are sure to captivate you.
Woy Woy: This small town on the Central Coast is just far enough for a day out by train. Travelling through the edge of Ku-ring-gai Chase, you will arrive at the river, where you could alight at Hawkesbury River Station, the train station for Brooklyn. From Brooklyn on the train, you’ll follow the river until you arrive at Woy Woy. You’ll find a small and walkable town with some great cafés and Woy Woy Fishermen’s Wharf.
Overnight trips from Rouse Hill by car and train
Assuming you can find accommodation, there are several trips away we’d recommend for autumn/Easter. However, keep traffic conditions in mind.
Canberra, by train or car, is an excellent city in which to view autumn colours, especially from a lookout point like Mount Ainslie or Black Mountain. If autumn leaves aren’t your thing, there’s plenty to do in Canberra, from the War Memorial to the National Gallery or the ever-popular Questacon.
Bathurst, by train or car, delivers a fine autumn display and hosts many events like the Bathurst Region Autumn Photography Competition and Mushroom Foraging (by yourself or with a guide). You can take an Autumn Colours tour, going behind the scenes at heritage sites.
Have we convinced you to stay in Rouse Hill for Easter?
With cooler weather and so many activities available, Easter is a great time to take advantage of all Sydney has to offer.
