Sometimes, the hustle and bustle of the festive season can leave us longing for a more relaxed holiday. If you’re unable to jet off to exotic locales or everything in your favourite holiday destination is booked, don’t despair. The Hills Shire offers a wealth of activities and attractions to keep you and your family entertained.
Animal encounters for family and friends
For animal lovers, the Hills Shire has plenty to offer.
Golden Ridge Farm in Dural is a popular destination where kids can get up close with farm animals, take a tractor ride and enjoy delicious homemade treats. You will need to book ahead before you visit.
The Koala Sanctuary at West Pennant Hills provides a unique opportunity to see koalas, wombats and other native Australian animals. It’s open every day except Christmas Day.
If you’re looking for a more exotic experience, Sydney Zoo at Eastern Creek is a great option. Here, you can encounter a variety of animals from Australia and around the world. Look out for lions, cheetahs, meerkats, red pandas, orangutans and many more exotic species.
For a more intimate wildlife encounter, Featherdale Wildlife Park in Doonside offers close-up experiences with koalas, kangaroos and other native animals. The park is a great choice for locals and a must-see if you’re hosting international visitors.
For a more laid-back day out, historic Bella Vista Farm Park is a perfect choice. This picturesque farm offers a variety of activities depending on the day. You can enjoy the parklands or attend one of their monthly open days.
Picnics and swimming for cool summer fun
When the summer heat kicks in, there are plenty of places to cool off and relax in and near the Hills Shire. For a peaceful picnic, head to the Yarramundi Reserve, a popular spot for families. However, check the NSW Government website before you go. The Reserve was affected by flooding and some trails might not be open.
If you’re looking for a more active way to cool down, there are several aquatic centres in the area. Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre in Baulkham Hills and Blacktown Leisure Centre in Stanhope Gardens are both good options for cooling off or getting in some exercise. The Carlile Swimming Centre in Norwest offers swimming lessons for all ages.
Lake Parramatta isn’t too far from The Hills and has the advantage of being protected by lifeguards.
Day trips from The Hills
For a more scenic escape, consider a day trip to the Upper Colo Reserve. Located about an hour’s drive from Castle Hill, this picturesque area offers stunning natural beauty, perfect for kayaking, fishing and swimming. The water level is usually low, making it ideal for younger children and those unsure of their water skills.
The Galston Valley Railway provides a great day out, especially if your family loves trains. You can visit on the second Sunday of each month.
By exploring the diverse range of activities and attractions that the Hills Shire has to offer, you can create unforgettable holiday memories without leaving home. So, the next time you’re planning your summer break, consider a staycation in the Hills.
